  • By Air: The nearest airport from Lonavala is Pune, which is 64 km from Lonavala.
  • By Train: Lonavala is on the main railway line between Mumbai and Pune, all express trains plying between the two cities stop here.
  • By Road : The bus service between Lonavala and Pune is good (2 hours). However, the ride is rough and it takes 4 hours to reach Mumbai from Lonavala.

 

ABOUT LONAVALA

Lonavala is a charming hill station, often called the 'Jewel of the Sahyadri Mountains' in India. Located in the Pune district of Maharashtra, Lonavala is much preferred hill resort to the Mumbaikars, especially since it is only 96 kms from Mumbai. Both Khandala and Lonavla are beautiful twin hill stations, at an altitude of 625 meters above sea level. In 1871, these hill stations were discovered by Sir Elphinstone, who was the Governor of Bombay Presidency during those times. Lonavala is a lovely hill station that offers pleasant respite from the turmoil of cities.

The term 'Lonavala' has been originated from the Sanskrit term 'lonavli', which suggests numerous caves. Perhaps the nearby caves like Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa serve as the answer to resort's name. Travel and tourism has always been great at the hill station, indeed due to its beauty. During monsoons, the natural splendor of this place gets doubled, especially when rain showers wash the entire region, developing ponds, while greenery looks all the more appealing. Besides nature's magnificence, Lonavala is also famous for the hard candy sweet, Chikki.

 

PLACES OF INTERESTS IN LONAVALA

The primary sightseeing destinations include Karla, Bhaja and Bedsa caves along with the two fortresses - Lohagad and Visapur. Rajmachi Point is another place where you could take the wonderful view of Rajmachi Fort and the valley down below. Ryewood Park and Shivaji Udyan are two wonderfully laid-out gardens that are dotted with unusually tall trees. If you want to go for sheer pleasure, go for boating in the clear waters of Tungarli Lake and Lonavla Lake.

close by Bhushi Dam, there is a striking waterfall that makes the most exciting spot in Lonavla. Midway between Bhusi Dam and Amby Valley, Lion's point is a great place to go for a drive. Tiger's Leap or Vaghdari is a cliff-top that offers panoramic view of the valley. Here echo-point is the most famous one and you can easily trek to this place. Khandala Dari is a nice place to go for trekking and hiking. One can trek through Monkey Hill to reach Gambhirnath Caves, an additional site to visit.

 

RELIGIOUS PLACES IN LONAVALA
  • Ekvira Temple: This temple is a few kilometers away from Lonavala. For reaching this place, one has to climb around 300 steps. One gets a beautiful view from the temple. As you climb ahead of Ekvira Temple, you reach the Karla Caves. These ancient Buddhist caves date back to 160 BC. They are somewhat similar to Kanheri Caves of Mumbai.   • Caves : (Rock-cut cave temples) Bhaja and Karla are rock-cut cave temples that are located at a distance of 11km from Lonavala. The history of the caves date back to the 2nd century. These rock-cut temples are amongst the finest examples of Buddhist architecture in India.
  • Elephanta Caves (Lord Shiva Temple) : The Elephanta Island is the site of the magnificent Elephanta caves, containing beautiful carvings, sculptures, and a temple to the Hindu God, Lord Shiva.

 

WHEN TO GO LONAVALA

One can enjoy the beauty of these places throughout the year, the best time to visit Lonavala is from October to May.

  • Summers : Summers in Lonavala are very pleasant. The maximum temperature remains around 30-35 deg Celsius. Occasional showers and the evening breeze helps cool down the temperature and make it very pleasant. You can carry light cotton clothes if you are traveling here in summers.
  • Monsoons : The monsoons turn this hill-station into a supernatural paradise! In fact, all those who have a penchant for traveling, come here during monsoons and swear by the magic and beauty. The black clouds and smell of rain in the air is enough to heighten your senses and give you a thrill of getting drenched in the rain like never before.
  • Winters : Temperatures drop down during winters, but the weather remains cool, not cold. Light woolens should suffice if you are traveling here after October. The average temperature during this time remains around 15 deg C.

Approximately all the festivals celebrated by different religions are enjoyed here also. People enjoy all the festivals without caste, creed and religion differences.

Pune Festival: The Pune Festival usually held around late Aug-early September during Ganesh Chaturthi, is the biggest festival in the city of Pune. Beginning on the day of the installation of idols of Elephant headed Lord Ganesha, one of the most loved deities of the Hindus, it goes on till the fascination of the Lord's idols on the tenth day.
