  • AIR : The nearest Jolly Grant Airport is 25 km from Dehradun. It is connected to Delhi with Indian Airlines having five flights a week from Delhi to this airport.
  • RAIL : Dehradun is well linked to all the major cities of the state by trains. There are direct daily trains that come here from Delhi, Calcutta, Mumbai, Varanasi, Lucknow and other places. The most notable ones are Shatabdi Express, Mussoorie Express and the Doon Express.
  • ROAD : Well connected by good and smooth roads and there are daily bus services that connect Dehra Dun to Mussoorie and Delhi.



Founded by Guru Dronacharya, according to the epic of Mahabharata, Dehradun is today one of the most developed cities of India. Situated on the threshold of a world full of adventure, spiritualism and tranquility, amidst the Shivalik ranges, the foothills of Himalayas, Dehra Dun is an entry point for all the trekkers and mountaineers onto their journey into the Garhwal Himalayas. A gateway to the popular hill station of Mussoorie and the pilgrimage centers of Haridwar and Rishikesh, Dehra Dun boasts of the famous Forest Research Institute and the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy. Doon Valley finds its place between the two most important rivers of India Ganga and Yamuna, and is a picturesque town with moderate climate and a number of places of tourist interest.

Dehradun is located on a plateau at a height of 640 meters, home of the Indian Military Academy and the headquarters of the Survey of India, an office which was established by Colonel George Everest, after whom the world's highest mountain has been named.



Forest Research Institutes : The only institute of its kind in Asia. It is located near the Indian Military Academy.

  • Robber's Cave : located 8 kms from the city near the cantonment is one of nature's phenomenon to confuse man, a stream of water suddenly disappears from sight and a few yards away appears again in a gushing stream. The cave is accessible by bus till Anarwala, a distance of 6 kms and the rest of the 2 kms have to be traveled on foot.
  • The Sericulture Centre : Also located 8 kms away in Premnagar is well worth a visit.
  • Sahastradhara : About 14 kms away is a place which has natural sulphur springs.
  • Malsi Deer Park : On way to Mussoorie is pleasant place set amidst sal forest.
  • Rajaji National Park : In the valley of the Shivalik Mountain Ranges this forest range is one of the finest ecological park .It has a good range of flora and fauna. It has impenetrable forest with varieties of mammals. In between November to the middle of June is the best time to enjoy safari here.
  • Water Sports Resort: For the Water sports lovers Dehradun Valley is a much adored name. Its famous water sport resort, Asan Barrage is 43 Km away from the main city. A number of water sports like water skiing, kayaking, boating, canoeing, rowing, etc. one can enjoy here. For bird watchers during winter it becomes a favorite destination.


  • Durbar Shri Guru Ram Rai : is a fortress like structure seems to have been built 300 years ago during the reign of Aurangzeb, when the Guru migrated to the valley and pitched his tent there. The Guru had a huge richly decorated flag and the locality around it was called the Jhanda Mohalla, the nucleus around which the new city of Dehradun gradually grew.
  • Tapkeshwar Temple : This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. This temple is about 5.5 km from the city bus stand, beside a stream. During Shivratri, a large fair is held here. This one of the most ancient temples of Dehradun, is a must see tourist place in Dehradun.
  • Lakshmansidh : 12 kms on the route to Rishikesh is a popular shrine. place of spiritual importance where lakshman the younger brother of lord rama has undergone reparation after killing Ravana, the demon king.
  • Chandrabani, Sai Darbar, Tibetan temple, Santala Devi Temple are other places of spiritual importance and lachhiwala, Asan Barrage Sports are picnic spots that are located in and around Dehradun.



All Round the Year (Best During Summers – April to June) The hill resort of Dehradun is ideally located amongst the hills and experiences moderately pleasant climate throughout the year. The temperature hovers between 44.5°C and 16.7°C in the summers. While in the Winters Dehradun grows colder with the temperature varying between 23.6°C and 5.4°C. Dehradun is flocked by tourists all through the year. In summers it is the retreat from the plains and in winters it is the snow-time! You can enjoy the snow in the Garhwal Himalayas during November/December. April to July is the ideal time for a trip to the Doon valley and skip the heat and the dust of the Indian summer in the hill resort of Dehradun.

The hill resort of Dehradun hosts several fairs and festivals. Dehradun celebrates the Jhanda Fair on the fifth day after Holi every year in March/April. The fair honors Guru Ram Rai who arrived in dehradun in 1699 on the same day. He built a gurudwara called Guru Ram Rai Durbar and hoisted his flag on it. The followers come together and the flag is ceremoniously unfurled at the Jhanda Chowk of Dehradun.

The Tapkeshwar temple of Dehradun celebrates the Shivratri fair with much fervor. Devotees of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati throng the Tapkeshwar Temple during the annual Shivratri fair. Then there is the Lakhawar Fair that is celebrated in the Lakhawar village during the months of September-October every year. Dance, music, and sports competitions mark the celebrations of the fairs in Dehradun.
